Suncheon-si Promotes Population Policy to Achieve a Self-Sufficient City of 300,000
Creating a Livable Residential Environment for Everyone with Lifecycle-Based Customized Policies
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Hyung-kwon] Suncheon City (Mayor Heo Seok) announced on the 15th that it will actively respond to securing population inflow momentum and changes in population structure by promoting citizen-experienced and future-prepared life cycle-based population policies to achieve a self-sufficient city of 300,000 people, beyond the three major cities of Honam.
As of the end of last month, Suncheon City has a population of 282,618 this year, maintaining its status as one of the three major cities in Honam achieved in November last year.
Meanwhile, the city plans to continuously pursue citizen-experienced welfare policies and expand residential infrastructure by implementing 152 projects across four life cycle-based population policy tasks.
The fields include ▲A happy city good for raising children (50 projects), ▲A city of opportunity where youth can realize their dreams (38 projects), ▲A comfortable and vibrant city for the elderly (23 projects), and ▲A healing residential city where anyone wants to live (41 projects).
First, in the field of ‘A happy city good for raising children,’ the city will strengthen support from pre-pregnancy to childbirth through practical and diverse new projects such as support for fetal anomaly screening test fees, expanded childbirth incentives, increased support for multi-child families, and support for infertile couples. It will also expand the operation of all-together care centers, strengthen Suncheon’s grassroots education, open Suncheon Bay Job World and youth swimming pools, creating an innovative educational environment for nurturing future talents, thereby enhancing community support for childbirth, childcare, and education.
In the field of ‘A city of opportunity where youth can realize their dreams,’ the city will create Suncheon-type new growth job models such as digital job creation and natural bio-industry promotion, and promote policies for youth independence and employment stability through the operation of Startup Yeondang, Youth Center, Global Webtoon Center, youth retention incentives, Hope Savings Account project, and expansion of the Suncheon-type MacGyver project. Stable housing support will also be expanded, including marriage congratulatory money for young couples, half-price rental apartments, and interest support for newlywed loans.
In the field of ‘A comfortable and vibrant city for the elderly,’ the city will focus on various supports to help seniors enjoy a healthy and active twilight life, such as the Life Second Act Support Center, Rest Shelter Silver Cafe, Senior Center Coordinators, Suncheon-style anchovy processing, One-span Garden Green Mobile Unit providing Suncheon-type senior jobs, support for dementia treatment costs for all citizens, opening of a dementia-specialized day and night care center, and expansion of community integrated care projects.
In the field of ‘A healing residential city where anyone wants to live,’ the city will accelerate the creation of a sustainable city where anyone wants to stay and live by continuously improving the residential environment through establishing universal design, creating a pleasant green environment such as fine dust blocking forests, developing Jangcheon-dong Smart Green City, operating Suncheon Everyone’s School as a small village-level learning center, expanding small libraries, and building comfortable and cozy living infrastructure centered on citizens’ cultural and educational environments accessible anywhere.
Mayor Heo Seok of Suncheon said, “I believe population policy is organically connected with all city administration.” He added, “We will pursue population policies that reflect the values our city has aimed for as an ecological city, such as long-term residential environment improvements, to enhance citizen happiness and build urban competitiveness by leveraging Suncheon City’s unique characteristics.”
