First Phone Call Between President Biden and President Xi Since Inauguration
[Asia Economy Beijing=Special Correspondent Jo Young-shin] China’s state-run Xinhua News Agency reported on the morning of the 11th that a phone call took place between President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Joe Biden. Xinhua stated that President Xi emphasized during the call that the two countries may have differing views on certain issues.
During the call, President Xi said, "China-U.S. relations are currently at a critical juncture," adding, "Conflicts between the two countries harm everyone, while cooperation benefits both sides." He further stated that confrontation between the two countries would undoubtedly be a disaster not only for China and the U.S. but for the entire world.
President Xi emphasized, "It is important to respect each other, treat each other as equals, and properly manage differences in a constructive manner."
In particular, regarding the Hong Kong and Xinjiang issues, President Xi said, "Issues related to Hong Kong and Xinjiang are China’s internal affairs and concern China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity," and pointed out that "the United States must respect China’s core interests and act cautiously."
He also stated, "China can engage in in-depth communication with the United States in various fields including the economy," and added, "If we understand what our differences are, the path to cooperation will open."
Finally, President Xi said, "China and the United States, as permanent members of the United Nations Security Council, have responsibilities and obligations," and added, "We must jointly maintain peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific region and contribute to global peace and development."
In response, President Biden said, "China is a country with a long history and great civilization, and the Chinese people are great people," adding, "The United States and China can cooperate in various fields such as climate change."
President Biden also said, "The United States will avoid misunderstandings and misjudgments through frank and constructive dialogue with China in the spirit of mutual respect," according to Xinhua News Agency.
Xinhua stated that this phone call between the two leaders will send a positive signal to the world and added that the two countries agreed to maintain close relations regarding China-U.S. relations and issues of common interest."
