View original image[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Seo Young-seo] Mokpo National Maritime University (President Park Sung-hyun) announced on the 10th that it signed an industry-academia cooperation agreement with Samsung Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. on the 9th in the conference room on the 2nd floor of the university headquarters to develop smart autonomous ship technology.
This agreement was made to establish a systematic cooperative system for the development of smart autonomous ship technology and to promote mutual development of both institutions through sharing the latest technological information.
Accordingly, Samsung Heavy Industries plans to install the remote autonomous navigation system ‘SAS (Samsung Autonomous Ship)’ on the training ship Segyero and conduct joint industry-academia research projects, while Mokpo National Maritime University will support legal guidance and simulation verification necessary for autonomous navigation.

President Park Sung-hyun of Mokpo National Maritime University stated, “We are very pleased that the state-of-the-art training ship Segyero will participate with Samsung Heavy Industries in the development of autonomous ship technology, which will be a high value-added industry in the future smart maritime era,” and added, “We hope this will serve as a foundation for nurturing excellent maritime talents capable of establishing the basis of the 4th Industrial Revolution with next-generation ships integrated with cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), big data, and the Internet of Things (IoT).”
