[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Bong-ju] A company employee in his 40s was sentenced to prison for attempting to kill a teenage girl he did not know by chasing her on the street late at night and repeatedly striking her head with a brick. It was found that he committed this "random crime" because he was in a bad mood due to work-related issues.
On the 8th, the Criminal Division 1 of the Bucheon Branch of the Incheon District Court sentenced A (44), a company employee charged with attempted murder, to three years in prison.
A was tried for attempting to kill B (19) by striking her head five times with a brick in the women's restroom on the 4th floor of a building in Bucheon, Gyeonggi Province, around 1 a.m. on September 16 last year.
He followed B, whom he met for the first time on the street that day, and committed the crime. Fortunately, the crime was stopped when a PC room employee rushed over after hearing B's screams for help.
It was investigated that A planned the random crime against an unspecified woman because he was angry after facing a situation where he had to change jobs, believing he was treated unfairly at work.
During the trial, A stated, "It is true that I injured the victim with a brick, but I had no intent to kill." The court said, "Intent to kill does not necessarily require a purpose or planned intention to kill. If the possibility or risk of death as a result of acts such as assault was foreseen, intent is recognized."
The court added, "The defendant chased the victim to an empty women's restroom late at night and had prepared broken bricks for paving stones, which are difficult for an adult male to hold with one hand. Considering that the area struck with the brick was the victim's head, the intent to kill is sufficiently recognized."
It continued, "The defendant committed a random crime against a woman he did not know simply because he was in a bad mood, which is a very serious offense. The defendant denied the intent to kill and made unconvincing claims without showing sincere remorse," while noting, "The fact that the murder was only attempted was taken into consideration."
