[Asia Economy Reporter Joselgina] The government will invest 80 billion KRW this year to foster the cloud industry. The strategy is to lead the success of the Digital New Deal through cloud activation.
The Ministry of Science and ICT announced that on the afternoon of the 9th, together with the National IT Industry Promotion Agency, the Korea Intelligent Information Society Agency, the Korea Internet & Security Agency, and the Institute for Information & Communications Technology Planning & Evaluation, it will hold the '2021 Cloud Project Integrated Briefing Session' via the KakaoTV channel. At this briefing session, explanations will be provided regarding the purpose and key contents of this year's projects, the application schedule, and detailed selection criteria for public and private institutions and companies wishing to participate in cloud projects.
The Ministry of Science and ICT will invest approximately 80 billion KRW this year, including R&D, to help secure competitiveness in the cloud industry. Specifically, these include ▲Cloud Flagship (25 billion KRW), Cloud Voucher (9.25 billion KRW), and Public Sector Cloud Adoption and Utilization Activation (10.95 billion KRW).
First, the Cloud Flagship project is a program that supports cloud infrastructure companies and service companies to collaborate in developing and distributing innovative cloud services for key industries. This year, more than 50 services will be selected and supported across five sectors: finance, energy, manufacturing (electronics), logistics (ports), and education (smart schools). In particular, the Ministry of Science and ICT explained that this year, by expanding into the finance and energy sectors, the creation and spread of excellent cloud services are expected.
The Cloud Voucher support project is aimed at promoting digital transformation based on cloud in the private sector. This year, it will support cloud adoption consulting, transition costs, and cloud usage fees for more than 500 small and medium-sized enterprises and small business owners. This year, it plans to more actively assist SMEs and small business owners in cloud transition by allowing demand companies to use demo programs before using cloud services.
The Public Sector Cloud Adoption and Utilization Activation project supports government, local governments, and public institutions by providing specialized consulting (technology, system, cost, etc.) to promote the adoption of private cloud in the public sector. This year, 30 institutions will be selected.
Additionally, the briefing session will introduce R&D projects (20.6 billion KRW) for developing next-generation cloud leading technologies such as high-performance cloud and multi-cloud, the 'Global SaaS Fostering Project' (5.5 billion KRW) to support the global expansion of domestic SaaS companies, the 'Public Sector Cloud Leading Project' (1.1 billion KRW) to create successful cloud transition cases in national and public institutions, and the 'Cloud Security Service Development and Improvement Support Project' (1.2 billion KRW).
Song Kyung-hee, Director of AI-based Policy at the Ministry of Science and ICT, said, “Cloud is a core infrastructure that accelerates the data and AI economy, and its importance is increasing day by day. Starting with this project briefing session, we will actively support the domestic cloud industry to gain competitiveness and foster a well-established ecosystem, and we ask for active participation from the industry.”
