Magnitude 6.1 Earthquake in the Eastern Taiwan Sea... No Casualties or Property Damage Reported
[Asia Economy Reporter Kwon Jae-hee] At 1:36 a.m. local time on the 7th, an earthquake with a Richter scale magnitude of 6.1 occurred under the sea 85 km east of Yilan, Taiwan.
A Richter magnitude of 6.1 is strong enough to make standing difficult and can cause significant damage to buildings.
The epicenter was located at 24.66 degrees north latitude, 122.6 degrees east longitude, at a depth of 112 km. This earthquake caused vibrations of up to intensity 4 in the eastern region of Taiwan.
Vibrations of intensity 2 or higher were also felt in several areas of northern and central Taiwan, including Taipei.
Since the earthquake occurred in the early morning hours, multiple official national alerts were issued, causing many Taiwanese citizens to be startled awake.
