[Asia Economy Reporter Chunhee Lee] Twelve additional people infected with a variant virus known to be more transmissible than the original COVID-19 have been confirmed.
On the 6th, the Central Disease Control Headquarters (CDCH) announced, "After analyzing samples from a total of 56 overseas-imported cases, variant viruses were confirmed in 12 cases."
The newly confirmed 12 cases are separate from the 'Gyeongnam and Jeonnam foreigner (Syrian) relative cluster infection' and consist of 10 cases infected with the UK variant and 2 cases infected with the South African variant.
Among them, 3 were confirmed during the quarantine stage, and the remaining 9 were confirmed through tests conducted during self-quarantine after entry.
The CDCH stated that there have been no cases of variant virus infection among people who had contact with these individuals; however, two passengers who sat in close proximity on the same flight as the infected persons have tested positive for COVID-19 and are currently being tested for variant infection.
With the addition of these 12 cases, the total number of confirmed variant virus infections in the country has risen to 51.
