Jeong Sye-gyun: "Retroactive Application of COVID-19 Loss Compensation Is Unrealistic"
[Asia Economy Reporter Kang Nahum] Prime Minister Chung Sye-kyun stated on the 5th regarding COVID-19 loss compensation that "waiting for something that may never happen and applying it retroactively is unrealistic."
During the National Assembly's government questioning session that day, Prime Minister Chung said, "Loss compensation is to be done by law, and it can only be implemented after the enforcement decree is also enacted. This process takes several months."
In response to criticism that Germany provided loss compensation solely through administrative orders, he rebutted, "Our country's system is fundamentally different in terms of legal and government operation systems, so it is difficult for us to do the same."
He added, "The government has not been idle; disaster relief funds have been disbursed in three phases and are still being executed," and explained, "(Even now) the government’s position is to prepare a fourth round of support funds to share the pain."

Regarding the simultaneous universal and selective payment of disaster relief funds and the question from Open Democratic Party lawmaker Kim Jin-ae about discord with Deputy Prime Minister for Economy Hong Nam-ki, he said, "The media exaggerates it as if there is a big fight," adding, "There is no significant difference in principle, but there may be different opinions to better fill in the details. I see it as healthy."
