Agency Representatives: "Delivery Business Operators and Workers' 'Secret Collusion'... Additional Agreement Invalid"
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Bo-kyung] Representatives of branch offices (agencies) of four courier companies, including CJ Logistics, recently claimed that the 'additional agreement' following the announcement of the first agreement by the social consensus body between courier companies and delivery workers is null and void.
Representatives of branch offices of the four courier companies CJ Logistics, Lotte, Hanjin, and Logen (hereinafter referred to as the Agency Alliance) held a press conference on the morning of the 4th at the main gate of the National Assembly to announce their position regarding measures against overwork deaths of courier workers. They called for a "re-examination from the starting point," stating that the additional agreement, which was made privately between courier companies and delivery workers on the 29th of last month, is an "unacceptable act."
Earlier, since December last year, the Agency Alliance had been participating in the 'Social Consensus Body for Measures Against Overwork Deaths of Courier Workers.' They agreed on the necessity of increasing sorting personnel and clearly stated that the costs and responsibilities for deploying sorting personnel lie with the business operators, signing the first agreement.
However, on the 29th of last month, the Overwork Death Countermeasures Committee (courier workers) declared a general strike, accusing the courier business operators of breaking the social agreement.
Subsequently, to prevent the strike ahead of the Lunar New Year, an additional agreement (deployment of sorting personnel by February 4) was drafted between courier business operators and courier workers. The Agency Alliance raised the issue that they were excluded from this process.
The Agency Alliance stated, "The courier business operators hastily held a private meeting with representatives of the Overwork Death Countermeasures Committee, achieving the withdrawal of the general strike by courier workers on January 29 under the condition that all contents of this process remain confidential."
They added, "An outrageous act of 'secret collusion' occurred in the social consensus body, which should be the most democratic," and claimed, "The additional agreement conducted excluding the branch offices of the social consensus body is fundamentally null and void."
