H2KOREA Strengthens Cooperation on Marine Green Hydrogen with Ship and Offshore Plant Research Institute through MOU
Hydrogen Produced from Marine Energy such as Offshore Wind and Wave Power
Pilot Projects on Marine Green Hydrogen Underway in Europe, Japan, and Other Regions
[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo Je-hoon] The Hydrogen Convergence Alliance Promotion Group (H2KOREA) announced on the 3rd that it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Korea Research Institute of Ships and Ocean Engineering (KRISO) to strengthen cooperation in the marine green hydrogen sector.
This agreement aims to promote the production and supply of marine green hydrogen, which is essential for realizing a hydrogen economy to address climate change. Marine green hydrogen refers to hydrogen produced using marine energy such as offshore wind and wave power.
Among the major hydrogen economy countries, the European Union (EU), the United Kingdom, and Norway are promoting the production and supply of green hydrogen utilizing offshore wind power, while countries like Japan are conducting pilot operations of hydrogen transport vessels.
Korea is also conducting a full-cycle demonstration project for green hydrogen through offshore wind power in Jeju Special Self-Governing Province in accordance with the 2050 carbon neutrality strategy and the Korean New Deal policy. Additionally, feasibility studies for hydrogen carriers to ensure stable hydrogen supply are underway through government projects.
Through this agreement, the two organizations will cooperate in research and development related to marine green hydrogen, discovering regulatory and institutional improvements, strengthening networks, and supporting the activation of government policies. They also plan to promote the creation of a green hydrogen ecosystem and research and development in the marine green hydrogen field.
