By replacing the Donggwang Radar Facility, which has been in operation since January 2009, with a facility equipped with the latest radar technology, air route surveillance over the Jeju Southern Flight Information Region (FIR) will be enhanced.
The government expects that installing the Jeju Southern Air Route Radar Facility at a high altitude near Hallasan Mountain will greatly contribute to the safe operation of aircraft.
The existing Donggwang Radar Facility is located in a lowland area with relatively limited detection range and partially relies on the Air Force for some functions, but the newly established radar facility will have a wider detection range and can operate independently without relying on the Air Force.
Additionally, the current 2D radar technology will be replaced with the latest 3D radar technology, improving altitude detection precision and accuracy. The Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) system will also be added to enhance aircraft surveillance capabilities.
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport explained, "Through surveillance of all aircraft flying the Jeju Southern air route, aviation safety in the airspace will be significantly strengthened. It is also expected to greatly assist in providing stable air traffic control services for the Jeju Southern air corridor, which is scheduled to be gradually taken over and operated starting March 25 next year."
