Suncheon City Ranks First in Jeonnam in Last Year's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport 'Traffic Culture Index Evaluation'
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Hyung-kwon] Suncheon City (Mayor Heo Seok) announced on the 29th that it ranked first in Jeonnam and third nationwide in last year's 'Traffic Culture Index Evaluation' conducted by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.
The Traffic Culture Index is a figure quantified by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport by dividing 229 basic local governments nationwide into four groups based on population and investigating the public's traffic safety awareness and cultural level. This evaluation was conducted targeting 49 local governments with a population of less than 300,000.
The Traffic Culture Index survey was conducted by quantifying 18 items through evaluation (observation, survey, literature review) of traffic safety status by local government and traffic accident occurrence rates in three areas: citizens' driving behavior, pedestrian behavior, and traffic safety efforts.
In this evaluation, Suncheon City received an A grade in driving behavior such as compliance with crosswalk stop lines, turn signal usage rate, seatbelt wearing rate, and in traffic safety status such as securing local government traffic safety expertise and implementation level of regional traffic safety policies, receiving high praise for the mature civic consciousness and efforts of Suncheon City.
On the other hand, pedestrian behavior such as drivers' signal compliance rate, use of smart devices while crossing, and traffic accident occurrence such as the number of traffic accident deaths per road extension length received a C grade, indicating somewhat poor evaluation results, leaving these as issues to be addressed.
Suncheon City invested a budget of 6.2 billion KRW last year to promote various projects such as lane painting throughout the city, installation and maintenance of traffic safety facilities, improvement of urban traffic systems, improvement of ITS traffic information service provision, maintenance of safety facilities in child protection zones, establishment of advanced intelligent transportation systems, installation and maintenance of citizen safety road surveillance CCTV and traffic signal systems, making multifaceted efforts to create a safe traffic environment.
