Yanolja Expands into Construction Industry, Fined for 'Sanitation and Safety Act' Violations at Construction Sites
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Daehyun] Yanolja C&D, the construction and engineering subsidiary of the accommodation reservation platform Yanolja, was fined after being prosecuted for violating the Industrial Safety and Health Act.
According to the legal community on the 29th, Judge Song Seunghun of the Criminal Division 12 at the Seoul Central District Court sentenced Yanolja C&D to a fine of 700,000 KRW on the 27th for failing to implement protective measures such as installing anti-slip devices on ladders and safety railings at a new construction site in Sungin-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul, where the company was prosecuted in October last year.
The violation of the Industrial Safety and Health Act by Yanolja C&D was detected by the Seoul Regional Employment and Labor Office in July last year.
At the trial, Yanolja C&D pleaded for leniency, stating, "We have made efforts to prevent the violation by conducting regular safety training for site managers and employees involved in the incident."
They also claimed to have visited the site more than three times a week to check the installation of safety facilities and instructed immediate action on any deficiencies.
However, the court judged that the company neglected supervisory duties to prevent violations, as it only submitted an improvement report after receiving a correction order from the Employment and Labor Office.
The court acknowledged that "(the defendant) conducted safety training and checked safety facilities," but pointed out that "there was no prior instruction to install safety facilities related to the pointed-out issues."
Meanwhile, Yanolja changed its subsidiary's name from Yanolja Design Lab to Yanolja C&D in 2018 to pioneer the construction market and has been expanding its business in areas such as the tourism hotel sector.
