View original image[Asia Economy Reporter Wondara] Park Yong-man, Chairman of the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry, submitted a petition to the court requesting leniency for Lee Jae-yong, Vice Chairman of Samsung Electronics.
The Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry announced on the 15th that Chairman Park had submitted the petition to the Seoul High Court trial panel.
Through the petition, Chairman Park reportedly expressed concerns that if Vice Chairman Lee, the head of Samsung who plays a pivotal role in the Korean economy, is detained again, it would have a negative impact not only on Samsung but also on the national economy.
According to the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry, this is the first time in over seven years of Park’s tenure as chairman representing the business community that he has submitted a petition in a corporate-related trial.

Meanwhile, the Seoul High Court Criminal Division 1 will deliver its verdict on the retrial of Vice Chairman Lee on the 18th. Lee was indicted in February 2017 on charges of bribing former President Park Geun-hye and Choi Seo-won (formerly Choi Soon-sil) to assist with the succession of group management rights. He was sentenced to five years in prison in the first trial and to two years and six months in prison with a four-year suspended sentence in the appellate trial.
