[Asia Economy Reporter Jong-il Park] Smart technology is being introduced to ensure children's pedestrian safety.
Gangseo-gu, Seoul (Mayor Noh Hyun-song) announced that it has established a ‘Smart CCTV Pedestrian Safety System’ to eliminate traffic blind spots in front of schools.
This measure aims to prevent accidents in relatively dangerous right-turn sections at intersections and strengthen the safety of pedestrians, including children.
The pedestrian safety system monitors pedestrians instead of vehicle drivers through AI CCTV installed above alleyways. When pedestrians are detected via CCTV, the electronic display board shows the message ‘Pedestrian Detected’ to encourage drivers to slow down.
Additionally, pedestrians are alerted to approaching vehicles through voice announcements (during the day) and logo projectors (at night) to warn them of incoming cars.
Under normal circumstances, the system also provides real-time information on time, weather, and fine dust levels, serving as a source of daily life information.
The district initially installed the system in two school zones near Banghwa Elementary School and Hwagok Elementary School.
These two areas were selected after comprehensive analysis of floating population, accident frequency, and proximity to schools. Both locations have obstructed views due to the flower beds near Banghwa Elementary and the exterior wall of Hwagok Elementary, making it especially difficult for right-turning vehicles to notice pedestrians.
Moreover, these areas have narrow roads and a high number of children pedestrians, requiring extra caution while driving.
The district plans to expand the installation of the ‘Pedestrian Safety System’ after analyzing the traffic accident prevention effects in the two existing locations.
A district official stated, “We expect that the smart CCTV will greatly help protect the safety of both pedestrians and drivers,” adding, “We will continue to integrate various smart technologies into district administration to improve residents’ quality of life.”
