"Helping Struggling Dairy Farmers" GS25 Launches 'Yonsei Milk Cone'
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Hye-seon] GS Retail's convenience store GS25 announced on the 11th that it has launched the 'Yonsei Milk Milk Cone' (hereinafter referred to as 'Yonsei Milk Cone') ice cream.
'Yonsei Milk Cone' is a GS Retail premium private brand product under 'Yours Premium,' developed by GS25's dairy product planning department to help dairy farmers who have been struggling due to the decline in milk and dairy product consumption amid the spread of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19).
This product was born after months of joint research and development between GS25's dairy product MD (merchandiser) and Yonsei University's Yonsei Milk product development team. It is made from high-quality raw milk produced at a dedicated Yonsei Milk farm. The milk content ratio is 60%. It features a softer and richer taste compared to typical milk ice cream. The price is 1,800 won.
The dairy industry has faced difficulties in recent years due to the continuous decrease in milk consumption. According to the domestic distribution consumption statistics survey by the Dairy Promotion Committee (data from the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs), the annual per capita milk consumption in 2019 was 33 kg, down 0.1 kg from 33.1 kg in 2018. Compared to 33.1 kg in 2017 and 32.7 kg in 2016, it has shown a decline for three consecutive years.
In response, GS Retail conducted a campaign to promote domestic milk consumption to support dairy farmers for two months starting in October last year in cooperation with the Milk Fund Management Committee. They held a 1+1 promotional event where customers received one free product for purchasing one of over 150 types of domestic dairy products, and supported dairy farmers through events that provided customers with product exchange coupons and discount coupons.
Furthermore, GS25 expects that the launch of 'Yonsei Milk Cone' will provide more active and practical support to help dairy farmers.
