[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Bong-ju] Shin Dong-geun, Supreme Council Member of the Democratic Party of Korea, pointed out regarding the 'incident where a man in his 70s set fire to a wreath supporting Prosecutor General Yoon Seok-yeol in front of the Supreme Prosecutors' Office' that "it is hard to understand whether a 70-year-old man burning five wreaths is really a matter warranting the issuance of an arrest warrant."
At the Democratic Party Supreme Council meeting on the 8th, Shin said, "The police requested an arrest warrant, but ultimately, the prosecution is the one to file the warrant," adding, "If the object set on fire was not a wreath supporting the Prosecutor General, it is hard to accept that an arrest warrant would be requested for such a matter."
He criticized, "The right to request an arrest warrant remains an exclusive authority of the prosecution," and said, "If the warrant request was to appease the Prosecutor General, that would be a serious abuse of prosecutorial power."
He continued, "The prosecution has repeatedly claimed to be the people's prosecution and a prosecution that respects human rights, but judging by their attitude in handling this arson case, I feel there is still a long way to go."
