View original image[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Suhwan] Hwang Hana (33), the granddaughter of the founder of Namyang Dairy Products, who is accused of using drugs during her probation period, appeared in court for a pre-arrest detention hearing (warrant review). Hwang faces the risk of detention after being indicted for allegedly using drugs again during her probation period.
The Seoul Western District Court conducted the warrant review for Hwang, who was charged with drug use, from 10:30 AM to 11:30 AM on the 7th. After the hearing, Hwang, who came out of the courtroom, briefly answered "No" to reporters' questions such as "Do you admit to the drug use charges?" and "Did you coerce false statements from your ex-boyfriend and others around you?" before leaving the court in a police car.
About 30 minutes before the hearing, Hwang arrived at the court with her face covered by a scarf and mask and headed to the courtroom without responding to reporters' questions.
Hwang was indicted for using methamphetamine at her Seoul residence and other locations from May to September 2015, and in November 2019, the appellate court sentenced her to one year in prison with a two-year probation period. This sentence was finalized, and she is currently under probation, but she has been booked again on drug use charges. The Yongsan Police Station in Seoul applied for an arrest warrant against Hwang for violating the Narcotics Control Act.
Last month, a petition demanding punishment for Hwang was posted on the Blue House National Petition Board. The petitioner wrote, "Drug offender Hwang has consistently reoffended, but due to the lukewarm response from investigative agencies despite testimonies and confessions from those around her, the investigation has not progressed," and added, "Hwang is using tricks such as bleaching her hair and receiving IV drips to avoid drug detection, making it highly likely that drugs will not be detected."
Meanwhile, Hwang is also facing theft charges for allegedly stealing luxury clothing last November. The Gangnam Police Station has begun an internal investigation by taking statements from the person claiming to be a victim of the theft to ascertain the facts.
