From the night of the 6th, all employees of Dongdaemun-gu Office and neighborhood centers engage in snow removal work... For residents' safety on the morning commute... Mayor Yoo Deok-yeol takes swift action with proactive response to minimize inconvenience, aligning with the snow removal plan goals
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] All employees of Dongdaemun-gu mobilized from the night of the 6th until 1 a.m. on the 7th to carry out snow removal operations throughout Dongdaemun-gu.
On the evening of the 6th, a heavy snow warning was issued in Seoul, resulting in significant snowfall. As temperatures dropped below freezing, the snow did not melt but instead accumulated and froze, turning many areas into icy roads.
While inspecting the area in the evening, Dongdaemun-gu Mayor Yoo Deok-yeol judged the situation to be serious. He returned to the Dongdaemun-gu Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters, conducted an emergency situation check with district executives, and at 9:45 p.m. issued a special directive to all Dongdaemun-gu Office employees to support snow removal operations.
The district focused on preventing residents’ slip-and-fall accidents on icy roads by actively utilizing sidewalk snow blowers and hand-pulled spreaders, concentrating on areas around subway stations, bus stops, and side streets to ensure smooth passage.
The Road Department conducted snow removal at 24 bus central lane stops, 11 major facilities including overpasses, underpasses, road footbridges, pedestrian bridges, and underground passages. They operated 13 sidewalk snow blowers to clear sidewalks along 11 routes including Sagajeong-ro.
Employees from 35 departments, including the Public Relations Office, meticulously cleared areas around subway station entrances and assisted staff from 14 neighborhood community centers in sweeping snow from steep side streets and alleys throughout the district.
The Cleaning Administration Department and environmental officials thoroughly removed snow from 59 vulnerable locations, bus stops, crosswalks, and pedestrian zones. The Water Management Department took charge of bicycle paths and walking trails along rivers.
District employees quickly communicated and shared the situation efficiently and systematically through the Naver Band group ‘Dongdaemun-gu Snow Removal Countermeasure Operation Room.’
Mayor Yoo Deok-yeol explained, “To achieve this year’s snow removal goal of ‘minimizing inconvenience to residents through proactive response,’ we issued a Level 1 work order from 4 p.m. before the snowfall to prepare in advance, and a Level 2 work order at 7:20 p.m. to ensure residents would not face inconvenience during rush hour. Employees carried out snow removal throughout the district. On the night of the 6th, all employees joined together to begin snow removal operations across the entire area to ensure residents’ safe commute the next day.”

He added, “Despite the increased fatigue from all employees supporting COVID-19 related duties beyond their regular work, I am grateful for their dedication in braving the late-night heavy snowfall to respond promptly and work late into the night on snow removal. Moving forward, we will continue to make swift decisions and proactive administrative actions during disasters and emergencies to keep residents safe.”
