COVID-19 and Natural Disasters Double Burden on Rural Farming and Fishing Villages... Request to Raise Gift Amount from 100,000 Won to 200,000 Won
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] Members of the Democratic Party belonging to the National Assembly's Agriculture, Forestry, Livestock, Food, and Maritime Affairs Committee (Chairman Lee Gaeho) announced a "Petition to Urge the Revision of the Enforcement Decree of the Improper Solicitation and Graft Act to Expand Consumption of Agricultural, Livestock, and Marine Products."
Along with this, they requested the government to raise the gift value limit for agricultural, livestock, and marine products and processed goods to 200,000 won during this year's Lunar New Year holiday period.
According to National Assembly member Lee Gaeho on the 6th, due to the current spread of COVID-19, national economic activities have rapidly contracted, and the real economy is deteriorating.
In rural fishing villages, farmers and fishermen are suffering enormous damage as the supply of field labor is disrupted due to COVID-19, and they are facing serious difficulties in securing sales channels for agricultural, livestock, and marine products.
Additionally, unprecedented long rainy seasons, heavy rains, successive typhoons, and other natural disasters last year have continued, causing poor crop conditions and a significant decrease in shipments of our agricultural, livestock, and marine products compared to previous years, deepening the management crisis for farmers and fishermen.
The government decided last year to temporarily raise the gift value limit for agricultural, livestock, and marine products and processed goods from 100,000 won to 200,000 won during the Chuseok holiday period. Through this measure, sales of agricultural, livestock, and marine product gifts during Chuseok increased by 10.5% for livestock products, 6.6% for fruits, and 4.7% for marine products compared to 2019.
