Jinju City Partially Abolishes Support Obligation Criteria for Basic Livelihood Security
Abolishment of Support Obligations for Elderly and Single-Parent Recipient Households
Expansion of Welfare Benefits for Vulnerable Groups
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Soon-kyung] Jinju City, Gyeongnam Province, announced on the 5th that starting this year, it will abolish the support obligation criteria for basic livelihood security subsistence benefits for elderly and single-parent beneficiary households.
This system improvement follows the "2nd Comprehensive Plan for Basic Livelihood Security" announced by the Ministry of Health and Welfare in August last year, reflecting the need to improve the support obligation criteria considering changes in social perceptions of support and the realities of welfare blind spots.
Accordingly, elderly and single-parent families who were previously unable to receive subsistence benefits due to the presence of a support obligor with the ability to support can now receive subsistence benefits regardless of the support obligor, provided their household income and property meet the criteria.
However, this does not apply if the support obligor is a high-income earner (annual income of 100 million KRW, monthly 8.34 million KRW) or a high-asset holder (900 million KRW, excluding financial assets).

A city official stated, "We plan to conduct intensive publicity throughout January to ensure that no households miss out on benefits due to lack of awareness of the system, such as those unable to receive subsistence benefits because of the support obligor criteria."
