Guro-gu Installs 'Smart Alimi' in Traffic Blind Spots Near Schools
Displaying CCTV footage on panels at crosswalks without traffic lights and intersections to inform traffic conditions... Installed at 15 locations near elementary schools and other areas, with plans to add 2 more sites in the new year
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Guro-gu (Mayor Lee Seong) is addressing traffic blind spots near schools and enhancing children's pedestrian safety by utilizing the ‘Smart Alimi’ system.
Guro-gu stated, “To protect children and other pedestrians, we are implementing a ‘Smart Alimi’ installation project using advanced technology, focusing on areas with heavy vehicle traffic and congested pedestrian movement.”
‘Smart Alimi’ is a facility designed to prevent traffic accidents at crosswalks without traffic lights and other blind spots. It displays CCTV footage on panels to inform drivers and pedestrians about situations in areas that are not visible.
Recently, Guro-gu installed a roundabout Alimi near Oryu Elementary School (Gocheok-ro 8-gil and 10-gil), which was previously dangerous due to tall buildings and walls blocking visibility. Near Yeongil Elementary School (Gurodong-ro 7na-gil), which has a sloped road, a slope blind spot Alimi was also installed.
Prior to this, ‘Intersection Alimi (notification panels)’ were installed mainly in school zones. The intersection Alimi alerts pedestrians of approaching vehicles through LED signs and voice announcements, while displaying real-time driving speeds on notification panels to encourage drivers to maintain a steady speed. In December, these were installed at three locations: Gaewoong Elementary School (Gaebong-ro 11-gil), Yeongseo Elementary School (Dorim-ro 20-gil), and Sarang Kindergarten (Gurojungang-ro 40-gil). Earlier last year, four locations including Guil Elementary School, Oryu Nam Elementary School, Dongguro Elementary School, and Deokui Elementary School received intersection Alimi installations, and in 2018, they were installed near Gocheok Middle School and Guil Middle School.
Guro-gu also expanded the installation of ‘Smart Right-Turn Alimi,’ a device to prevent accidents caused by right turns at crosswalks. Following the installation at the three-way intersection near Gyeongin-ro 59-gil 7 in February last year, additional installations were made in November at three locations: Mirae Elementary School (Saemal-ro 73), Gosan Elementary School (Jungang-ro 6), and Segok Elementary School (Gocheok-ro 114).
Additionally, Guro-gu established a ‘Smart Crosswalk Safety Guidance System’ near Sindorim Elementary School (Sindorim-dong 316-6). If a driver speeds or crosses the stop line, the vehicle’s image is displayed on an electronic billboard. If a pedestrian jaywalks, a warning voice is broadcast.
So far, the district has installed Smart Alimi at a total of 15 locations and plans to select two more sites for additional installations in the new year.
