No Confirmed Cases in North Korea, Requests COVID-19 Vaccines Through International Organizations
[Asia Economy Reporter Cho Hyun-ui] It has been reported that North Korea has submitted an application to the non-governmental organization Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, to receive the COVID-19 vaccine.
The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported this on the 4th (local time). Gavi is leading the 'COVAX' initiative to supply COVID-19 vaccines worldwide.
According to WSJ, a Gavi spokesperson did not comment on whether North Korea had applied for the vaccine but said, "We are calculating vaccine demand from each country and will provide new information soon."
Last month, Gavi announced that out of 92 low-income countries eligible for the 'COVAX Advance Market Commitment (COVAX AMC),' which supplies vaccines to developing countries funded by donations from developed countries, 86 countries had submitted vaccine applications.
WSJ also cited multiple sources saying that North Korea recently inquired about vaccine procurement methods at several European countries' embassies in the past few weeks.
