Focusing on Building a Marine Tourism Hub City Linked to Marine Healing and Marine Bio Industries
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Kyung-pil] Shin Woo-cheol, Wando County Governor, stated at the New Year's ceremony on the 4th, “The New Year's motto is set as Yujigyeongseong (有志竟成), meaning 'If you have the will to achieve, you will surely succeed,' and I will steadily lead the county administration to build a 'hopeful future Wando where everyone lives well.'”
He continued, “Despite the difficulties caused by COVID-19 last year, we secured the largest-ever project budget of 103.5 billion KRW through public contests such as the Fishing Village New Deal 300 project. Additionally, we secured 92.6 billion KRW for the marine healing industry and Wando Arboretum was finally selected as the site for the National Subtropical Arboretum, laying the foundation for the development of marine and forest healing.”
Wando County has designated 2021 as the inaugural year for the marine healing industry and plans to prepare for the post-COVID-19 era and accelerate Wando's development by focusing on the marine healing industry, marine bioindustry, and the construction of a marine tourism hub city.
The key tasks for county administration in 2021 include leading the marine healing and marine bioindustries, promoting regional economic revitalization through virtuous cycles of production and consumption, pursuing future-oriented regional development projects, establishing a foundation for the co-growth of agriculture, fisheries, and livestock industries, developing distinctive cultural and tourism resources, creating a safe and livable environment, and building a comprehensive social welfare system.
In particular, to proactively lead the century-long county industries of marine healing and marine bioindustries, efforts will be accelerated to build a Marine Healing Center, Marine Climate Healing Center, Marine Culture Healing Center, establish a marine bio research complex, and construct certified production facilities for bioactive seaweed materials.
Furthermore, diverse and distinctive tourism content in the 12 towns and townships will be intensively developed according to regional characteristics, and cultural and tourism resources will be linked with marine healing to focus on building a marine tourism hub city.
In addition, visions for Wando's development include expanding international certification for eco-friendly seafood, pioneering overseas markets, preserving clean seas, urban regeneration projects, upgrading the coastal tourism road between Wando and Goheung to a national highway, constructing the Honam-Jeju high-speed railway passing through Wando, and successfully hosting the 2022 Wando International Seaweed Expo.
Finally, Governor Shin expressed his ambition, saying, “We will devote more effort to recovering the local economy suffering from COVID-19 and concentrate all capabilities to restore stability to the lives of county residents.”
