Pope Francis Criticizes 'Overseas Travel Amid Lockdown Damage'... "Take Care of Each Other"
Request for Attention and Support for the Underprivileged
[Asia Economy Reporter Jeong Hyunjin] Pope Francis criticized those who went on vacation abroad to avoid lockdown measures despite the spread of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19), calling their actions "inconsiderate behavior" that failed to consider the ripple effects of their actions.
On the 3rd (local time), according to CNN and others, the Pope mentioned news reports about people who traveled abroad to avoid lockdowns imposed in their own countries during his Sunday Angelus prayer sermon held at the Apostolic Palace Library, saying, "I felt great sadness reading this."
The Pope said, "These people do not think about those who stay at home, those economically affected by the lockdown, or those who are sick (due to virus infection)," adding, "It pains me deeply that such people only think about going on vacation and enjoying themselves." He continued, "No one knows what will happen in 2021, but what we can do is try a little harder to care for one another."
The Pope especially urged renewed special attention and support for the most vulnerable and disadvantaged. He added, "We know that everything will improve through various measures and God's help, and we will care for the weakest and most socially disadvantaged, working together for the common good."
This Sunday's Angelus prayer sermon by the Pope was held at the Apostolic Palace Library instead of the usual St. Peter's Square due to the impact of lockdown measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19, and was delivered worldwide via streaming service.
