According to the AP News on the day, shortly after the plane carrying Yemen's new prime minister and cabinet members landed at Aden Airport, three large explosions occurred. Citing Yemeni government officials, AP News reported, "Four ballistic missiles fell on the airport." Prime Minister Maeen Abdulmalik of Yemen and government officials who were disembarking from the plane safely moved to the presidential palace in Aden. Prime Minister Maeen condemned the attack on Twitter, saying, "The government officials, including myself, are safe," and called it a "cowardly terrorist attack."
The exact identity of those who carried out this terrorist attack is not known, but the Yemeni government suspects it was the Houthi rebels supported by Iran. Muammar Al-Eryani, the Minister of Information, stated on Twitter, "This attack only strengthens our determination to restore the nation's stability."
Aden has been the temporary capital where the Yemeni government took refuge after the Houthi rebels, a Shia armed group supported by Iran, captured the capital Sana'a following the outbreak of the Yemeni civil war in 2015. President Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi fled to Saudi Arabia after the civil war intensified, and the Saudi-led Arab coalition has been supporting the Yemeni government led by President Hadi, engaging in combat with the Houthi rebels for over five years.
