Chungnam, '41 Port Development Projects' Reflected in Government Plan
[Asia Economy (Hongseong) Reporter Jeong Il-woong] Forty-one port development projects in the Chungnam region have been included in the government plan.
Chungnam Province announced on the 31st that 41 projects underway at six ports in five cities and counties within the province have been included in the '4th Basic Port Plan' and the '3rd Basic Port Redevelopment Plan,' which will be officially announced by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries at the end of the year.
The Basic Port Plan is the highest-level statutory plan in the port sector, outlining policy directions, facility development and maintenance, and linked transportation network construction projects for 60 ports nationwide over the next 10 years (2021?2030). The Port Redevelopment Basic Plan is a development plan for idle ports and their surrounding areas.
The port projects in Chungnam included in these plans are as follows: Dangjin Port with 12 projects (project cost 1.2815 trillion KRW), Daesan Port with 10 projects (720.1 billion KRW), Boryeong Port with 4 projects (294 billion KRW), Daecheon Port with 9 projects (630.4 billion KRW), Janghang Port with 1 project (27.5 billion KRW), and Biin Port with 5 projects (33.1 billion KRW), totaling 2.9866 trillion KRW in project costs.
Through these projects, Dangjin Port will undertake the construction of a 3.1 km connecting bridge linking Sinpyeong and the inner port, and a 5.8 km access road within the reclamation area of the western wharf.
Daesan Port plans to specialize its advantages as a container-only port, while simultaneously promoting tourism facility development and air quality improvement projects.
Additionally, dredging of navigation routes and inner port turning basins will be carried out to improve ship navigation conditions. In particular, the province expects to reduce air pollutant emissions by up to 96% compared to using bunker C fuel by installing onshore power supply facilities that can directly secure the power needed for ship cargo handling operations.
Boryeong Port will create a 419,000㎡ dredged soil disposal site at the new port and proceed with the construction of a new port management wharf, accelerating the long-awaited development of Boryeong New Port.
Daecheon Port's eastern dredged soil disposal site is also included in the government plan for marine tourism development. In addition, Janghang Port plans to redevelop the old wharf, a 58,000㎡ pier for small vessels.

A provincial official stated, "We will strive to ensure that the projects included in this plan are implemented early to revitalize the local economy and enhance the competitiveness of import-export companies within the province," adding, "Above all, beyond the projects already included, we will continuously discover new projects to support Chungnam's leap as the center of the Pan Yellow Sea region through marine development."
