Suncheon City Safety Culture Awards Hold 1st Ceremony
Two Individuals and Three Organizations Awarded for Contributions to Safety Culture Promotion
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Hyung-kwon] Suncheon City (Mayor Heo Seok) awarded the 1st Suncheon City Safety Culture Awards to individuals and organizations who contributed to the promotion of safety culture at the city hall's main conference room yesterday.
The Suncheon City Safety Culture Awards were established this year to recognize individuals, organizations, and corporations who have made significant contributions to disaster and safety management development, including disaster prevention, preparedness, response, and recovery, in order to realize a safe city where citizens can live with peace of mind.
The award categories included natural and social disasters, fires, traffic accidents, crimes, infectious diseases, and safety accidents. Winners were selected through public applications, on-site investigations, and evaluations by the Suncheon City Safety Culture Awards judging committee.
At the award ceremony, a total of five recipients were honored, including two individuals and three private organizations who have devoted themselves to disaster safety.
In the individual category, the award was given to Jang Taek-hwan (48 years old), who devoted himself to emergency evacuation and protection activities for about 40 residents around the Seomjin River during the heavy rains in Hwangjeon-myeon this year, as well as flood recovery efforts; and Baek Jong-won (59 years old), who dedicated himself to volunteer activities such as the ‘Visiting Elementary School Safety Class’ and bicycle safety education for people with disabilities.
In the organization category, the recipients were: Suncheon Jeil University Safety Volunteer Corps (Representative Park No-chun), which conducts gas, electricity, and boiler inspections and repair services to prevent fires in rural remote villages every year, operates fire evacuation experience centers, and acts as guardians of household safety in the local community; Sarangsil-eun Traffic Volunteer Corps Suncheon Branch (Representative Kim Dong-ho), which carried out a nationwide traffic campaign to reduce traffic accident deaths by half from 5,000, operated disinfection booths for commercial taxis during COVID-19, and supported flood-affected areas in Gurye; and the Korea Association for Life Safety and Health (Representative Heo Bang-geul), which promotes youth safety culture movements such as customized safety experience education, rural talent-sharing movements for creating safe and healthy villages, emergency response methods, and raising safety awareness.
Individuals who received the 1st Suncheon City Safety Culture Awards were given a certificate and a prize of 1 million KRW each, while organizations received a certificate and a prize of 3 million KRW each.

A Suncheon City official said, “Through the Safety Culture Awards, which were presented for the first time this year, we expect to discover and honor unsung heroes who have made significant contributions to accident and disaster prevention, thereby contributing to the creation of a more convenient and safer city for our citizens.”
