[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Hyung-kwon] The Cheongam Academy Foundation held an emergency board meeting the day before and resolved to cancel the suspension of Seo Hyung-won, president of Cheongam College.
The emergency board meeting held via video reviewed and canceled the suspension of President Seo, and on the agenda of ‘Chairman election,’ Director Kang Sa-beom was approved as the new chairman with unanimous consent from all attending directors.
Director Kang Sa-beom is the granddaughter of Kang Gil-tae, the founder of Cheongam College, and the daughter of former President Kang Myung-woon, and is currently reported to be residing in Japan.
With this, Director Kim Do-young, who had been accused by the faculty union and others of unfair board operations during the process of suspending President Seo, stepped down, and with the election of a new chairman and the return of President Seo, the Cheongam College incident has been temporarily resolved.
While the video board meeting was in progress, dozens of faculty and staff members from the Cheongam College Faculty Union, Faculty Council, and Staff Union continuously protested with slogans such as "Resign Chairman Kim Do-young," "Cancel the suspension of President Seo Hyung-won," and "Reject the appointment of Vice President Kim Han-seok as acting president."
A Cheongam College professor, greeting with “Justice is alive,” could not hide his joy at the resolution of this board meeting.
Professor Jung Yong-tae, head of the Cheongam College branch of the Faculty Union, said, “I am glad that the normalization of the school has been achieved quickly,” and added, “I thank the citizens and civic groups who supported this incident, and we will strive to become a university that coexists with the local community.”
He also said, “Internally, the unity of professors and staff was a great strength,” and “I hope Cheongam College will develop through cooperation with the new chairman.”
According to a Cheongam College official, former Director Kim Do-young closed the meeting and left the video board meeting that day, but there was an opinion among the directors to “continue the board meeting,” and all directors clearly expressed that they “could not agree to adjourn.”
It is reported that there are some objections to the resolution of the emergency board meeting held this time, and attempts were made to contact former Director Kim Do-young by phone to hear his opinion, but he did not answer.
A Cheongam College alumnus said, “There must never be any more noisy incidents; all the damage falls on the students,” and “If such an incident occurs again, we will all step forward.”
