Samsung Seoul Hospital Receives 60.7 Billion KRW Compensation for MERS Losses
[Asia Economy Reporter Choi Dae-yeol] The Ministry of Health and Welfare announced on the 29th that it has paid Samsung Seoul Hospital 60.7 billion KRW in compensation for losses.
This compensation is related to the closure of wards during the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) outbreak in 2015. The Ministry decided to pay the compensation at the 10th COVID-19 Loss Compensation Deliberation Committee held on the 25th of last month. The amount was calculated at the 1st Loss Compensation Deliberation Committee in 2017.
According to the Ministry, regarding the losses of Samsung Seoul Hospital due to ward closures during the 2015 MERS outbreak, the decision on loss compensation was postponed at the 3rd deliberation in the same year to reflect the audit results on whether the delay in submitting the contact list violated the "Infectious Disease Prevention and Control Act." Subsequently, based on the audit results, it was decided not to pay.
Later, in the lawsuit filed by Samsung Seoul Hospital against the Ministry of Health and Welfare to cancel the refusal to pay compensation, the Ministry lost the case in May, with the ruling confirming that the refusal did not fall under the exclusion criteria stipulated by the relevant law.
