[Asia Economy Reporter Ra Young-cheol] Recently, as COVID-19 variant virus infections have been spreading in Europe, centered on the United Kingdom, a family of three who entered the country from the UK tested positive for COVID-19. Among them, one person died of cardiac arrest, and the infection status of the variant virus is being analyzed.
According to Goyang City health authorities on the 27th, around 10:45 a.m. on the 26th, an 80-year-old Mr. A in Ilsandong-gu, Goyang City, was transported to the hospital due to cardiac arrest and died about 40 minutes later.
The result of whether the deceased Mr. A was infected with the variant virus will be available in the first week of January. So far, there have been no cases of infection with the UK-origin variant virus in Korea.
Meanwhile, health authorities are also checking the infection status of the variant virus for the two family members who returned with Mr. A, and are conducting epidemiological investigations such as identifying their movement paths and contacts. This family tested negative upon entry and was under self-quarantine.
The infection status of the variant virus is confirmed by whole genome sequencing, which compares and analyzes the entire nucleotide sequence of the virus.
