National Research Institute of Maritime Cultural Heritage Publishes 'Uri Bae Glossary'
Compilation of Korean Joseon and Navigation Technical Terms... Contains 1,927 Headwords
On the 22nd, the National Research Institute of Maritime Cultural Heritage announced the publication of the "Dictionary of Uri-Bae Terms," which contains terminology related to Joseon-era shipbuilding and navigation techniques in Korea. The dictionary compiles terms used in the restoration and reproduction of Hanseon (韓船, traditional Korean ships) along with the navigation skills of old boatmen that have been recorded over time. It is divided into six themes: ship structure, types of ships, seonso (船所) and seonchang (船艙), shipbuilding tools, shipbuilding and navigation rituals, and navigation techniques, containing 1,927 headwords. The dictionary includes diagrams of Uri-Bae as an appendix for easy understanding by anyone. It will be distributed to national and public libraries, museums, and research institutions. It is also available for reading on the National Research Institute of Maritime Cultural Heritage's website.
