On the 22nd, the Ministry of National Defense announced that the revised enforcement decree of the "Act on the Excavation of Korean War Remains," which has been promoted since last September, was promulgated.
With this revision, it has become possible to pay rewards to bereaved families who contributed to the identification of Korean War soldiers before the law was enforced on April 2, 2019, and up to 10 million won will be paid to 132 people.
So far, among about 133,000 missing soldiers from the Korean War, remains of about 10,000 have been excavated, and about 60,000 bereaved family DNA samples for identification have been secured.
The Ministry of National Defense explained the background, saying, "This is to increase interest and participation in the 'Bereaved Family DNA Sample Collection Project' for the identification of Korean War remains among missing soldiers' families and the entire nation, and to implement the national policy of 'fully repaying the dedication to the country.'"
