Gwangsan District Council of Gwangju Issues Statement Urging Halt to Maruk-dong Ammunition Depot Relocation
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Gwan-woo] The Gwangsan District Council of Gwangju Metropolitan City announced on the 21st that it adopted a "Statement Urging the Suspension of the Maruk-dong Ammunition Depot Relocation Without Military Airport Relocation" at the 3rd plenary session of the 261st regular meeting.
The statement, led by Councilor Park Hyun-seok, opposes the unilateral relocation of the Maruk-dong off-base ammunition depot pushed forward by the Ministry of National Defense without a resident opinion-gathering process, and urges that it be promoted in connection with the military airport relocation.
Councilor Park explained, "Even if the military airport relocation is confirmed, the Ministry of National Defense has been making the absurd argument that it will take at least 12 years until the relocation, so the ammunition depot facility can be used for more than 10 years. In August, they applied for a building permit to relocate the Maruk-dong ammunition depot within the military airport, and last month, Gwangsan-gu and Seo-gu approved the construction."
He continued, "Residents in noise-affected areas who have been waiting only for the military airport relocation are strongly opposing, fearing that the relocation of the ammunition depot might cause the military airport relocation to fall through," urging the suspension of the Maruk-dong ammunition depot relocation.

Councilor Park stated, "Until the ammunition depot relocation is re-pursued, none of the institutions including the Ministry of National Defense, Gwangju City, Gwangsan-gu, and Seo-gu have gone through a resident opinion-gathering process," and asserted, "The Ministry of National Defense should relocate the Maruk-dong ammunition depot in connection with the military airport relocation as originally planned, and Gwangsan-gu should immediately revoke the building permit for the ground construction of the ammunition depot within the military airport."
