Pohang City Cancels New Year's Homigot Sunrise Event... Sunrise Plaza Fully Closed

View original image[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Dong-wook] Pohang City, Gyeongbuk, recently announced on the 21st that due to the rapid resurgence of COVID-19 infections, the '23rd Homigot Korean Peninsula Sunrise Festival' has been canceled, and Homigot Square will be completely closed from the 31st until New Year's Day.
Homigot Square, which attracts hundreds of thousands of tourists every year, is a place with a very high density of visitors coming to see the sunrise. Pohang City judged that it would be difficult to maintain social distancing and decided to close the area. Instead, the sunrise will be broadcast live through local cable TV and Pohang City's YouTube channel (Pohang City Hall).
The live broadcast prepared to replace this year's festival will take place at three locations: Homigot, Yeongildae Beach, and Igari Anchor Observatory. The broadcast will feature sunrise scenes, citizen hope video messages to comfort citizens weary from COVID-19, and New Year's greetings.
A Pohang City official stated, "To prevent COVID-19, we are actively enforcing strengthened social distancing and completely restricting access to the Homigot tourist site. We ask that you comfortably enjoy the New Year's sunrise at home through TV broadcasts and YouTube."

Meanwhile, to uplift the spirits of citizens tired from COVID-19, Pohang City plans to select 20 famous sunrise spots in Pohang, excluding Homigot, such as Yeongildae Beach, Yeongilman Port, and Ilchuram in Sinchang-ri, Janggi-myeon, and upload sunrise videos to the 'Pohang City Hall' YouTube channel.
