Gwangju Nam-gu 'Visiting Health and Welfare Service' Top Institution
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Seon-gang] Nam-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City (District Mayor Kim Byeong-nae) announced on the 21st that it was selected as the best institution in the "Provision of Visiting Health and Welfare Services" category in the 2020 Regional Welfare Project Evaluation conducted by the Ministry of Health and Welfare, receiving a government citation along with a prize of 15 million KRW.
The Ministry of Health and Welfare conducts an annual regional welfare project evaluation to discover welfare services and best practices provided by local governments nationwide.
The regional welfare project evaluation is conducted annually through detailed assessments in various fields, including the evaluation of the implementation results of the community security plan, provision of visiting health and welfare services, and operation of the Hope Welfare Support Group. This year, four new fields, including policies for the disabled, were added, making a total of 16 fields evaluated.
Nam-gu was selected as the best institution in the "Provision of Visiting Health and Welfare Services" category, one of the 16 fields, in the 2020 regional welfare project evaluation.
The reason for being selected as the best institution was the outstanding performance of the Happy Welfare 7979 Center and the 7979 Volunteer Group, which were promoted as a district mayor’s pledge project to minimize welfare blind spots, receiving high praise from the Ministry of Health and Welfare evaluation committee.
In particular, the Happy Welfare 7979 Center and the 7979 Volunteer Group were found to be a reliable support for vulnerable residents such as elderly people living alone, persons with disabilities, and single-parent families.
Since its opening in June last year, the 7979 Center provided 20,427 welfare call services to vulnerable residents requesting help until September this year, offering customized integrated welfare services. Through the 7979 Volunteer Group, it resolved over 460 various daily inconvenience issues such as repairing broken electric appliances.
Additionally, by operating customized welfare teams at 16 administrative welfare centers in the district, welfare officials provided demand-centered welfare services through home visits and other fieldwork, contributing to strengthening the welfare functions of local governments, which was also recognized as an achievement.
Moreover, even amid the COVID-19 crisis, Nam-gu conducted disinfection and distributed bean sprout kits to prevent COVID blues for vulnerable residents, and implemented unique projects differentiated from other local governments, such as the smart plug project aimed at zero solitary deaths, earning the honor of being selected as the best institution.
