The ‘Air Purification Forest’ was established to reduce fine dust generated from the Gangjin Industrial Complex and to protect the health of residents from air pollution.
The county was selected for the ‘Fine Dust Blocking Forest Contest Project,’ part of the regionally tailored living SOC Green New Deal project led by the Korea Forest Service.
With a project budget of 1 billion KRW, about 7,000 trees of excellent fine dust reduction species such as thorn trees and camphor trees were planted this year around the Gangjin Industrial Complex.
The air purification forest is effective in lowering fine dust concentration due to its lower temperature and higher humidity compared to urban areas. According to research by the National Institute of Forest Science under the Korea Forest Service, it has been shown to reduce urban fine dust (PM 10) concentration by an average of 25.6% and ultrafine dust (PM 2.5) concentration by an average of 40.9%.
Furthermore, the county secured a budget of 1 billion KRW for the air purification forest next year as well. They plan to create a multi-layered and multi-strata forest with species highly effective in reducing fine dust around the Gangjin-eup landfill site (near Nampo Soccer Stadium) to provide green infrastructure for residents and tourists.
