'Sustainable Agricultural Park' Established in Ssangmun-dong, Dobong-gu... Garden Plots and Gardens at the Same Time!
Kitchen Garden Introducing New Farming Methods and Creating Theme Farms in Ssangmundong Area... Partnership with Duksung Academy to Transform Idle Land into Parks
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] A new type of garden plot has been created in Ssangmun-dong, Dobong-gu.
Dobong-gu (Mayor Dongjin Lee) established an urban agriculture park on 6,828㎡ of the Deoksung Women’s University herbal garden site on the 15th to promote leisure activities for local residents and sustainable urban agriculture.
Originally planned as a garden plot area, the site was changed to a park-style urban agriculture experience space to achieve a twofold effect through garden plots, due to the lack of neighborhood parks in Ssangmun-dong compared to other areas in the district.
The district, through public-academic cooperation, created a kitchen garden and a theme farm where native Korean crops can be appreciated on the herbal garden site of the College of Pharmacy at Deoksung Women’s University.
The kitchen garden uses natural cultivation methods and is a ridge-shaped garden plot that utilizes symbiotic relationships between plants, creating a new form of garden plot that blurs the boundary between garden and plot.
In particular, the theme farm is organized into six themes: ▲traditional plants ▲vegetables ▲herbs ▲medicinal plants ▲edible flowers ▲aquatic plants, planting about 70,000 plants of 130 species including cotton.
Additionally, the park includes ▲34 tall trees of 6 species such as Ipap tree, Patbae tree, and crabapple ▲9,400 small trees of 14 species such as arrowwood, lilac, and mountain azalea ▲and 41,000 herbaceous plants and silver grass, allowing visitors to enjoy a beautiful garden throughout all four seasons.
Along with this, the district provides ancillary facilities such as a picnic garden where users can share the produced crops, parking lots, and an education center for user convenience.
Furthermore, starting next year, to revitalize urban agriculture, the district plans to invite professional instructors to operate eco-friendly farming methods, traditional crop cultivation, and experience programs targeting various groups of residents including elementary school students.

Mayor Dongjin Lee of Dobong-gu stated, “Through the establishment of this agricultural park, the first attempt among Seoul’s autonomous districts, we will transform neglected idle spaces into a Green Forest, providing a friendly and open resting place where anyone can visit,” and added, “To promote the Green New Deal, which is a global trend, we plan to successfully expand and operate permaculture (sustainable agriculture).”
