Gangdong-gu Installs Speed Enforcement Cameras in School Zones
Speed Enforcement Cameras Installed in 25 Elementary School Child Protection Zones...Continuous Expansion Focused on Childcare Centers, Kindergartens, and Other Child Protection Areas
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Gangdong-gu (District Mayor Lee Jeong-hoon) has installed 27 speed enforcement cameras at 25 school zones within the district to provide a safe walking environment for children.
In September, the district installed speed enforcement cameras at 15 elementary school zones including Gomyung Elementary School and Sinmyeong Elementary School, and in November, cameras were installed at 12 locations including 8 schools such as Daemyeong Elementary School and Seonrin Elementary School, 2 special schools, and 2 kindergartens.
The 12 locations installed in November are scheduled to operate in the first half of 2021 after undergoing acceptance inspection and pilot operation by the Road Traffic Authority in January next year.
This year, the district invested a total of 922 million KRW, including 520 million KRW in national funds and 420 million KRW in city funds, to install speed enforcement cameras. Next year, the district plans to expand the installation of speed enforcement cameras focusing on school zones with frequent traffic accidents such as daycare centers and kindergartens.
Additionally, the district is leading efforts to achieve zero traffic accidents in school zones by maintaining traffic safety facilities such as installing protective fences along children's commuting routes, installing security CCTV and yellow carpets, and replacing LED signs and protective fences.

Lee Jeong-hoon, Mayor of Gangdong-gu, said, “Since the Road Traffic Act (commonly known as the Minsik Act), which limits vehicle speed to 30 km/h in school zones, was enforced last March, we have installed speed enforcement cameras to strengthen traffic safety in school zones. We will continue to make multifaceted efforts to create a safe environment where children and parents can travel with peace of mind.”
