Jeju Island to Raise Alert Level to 2 from the 18th... Mandatory Testing for All Arrivals Planned
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters (Jeju) Reporter Park Chang-won] As the spread of COVID-19 intensifies in Jeju, the Jeju government is pushing to mandate diagnostic testing for visitors arriving on the island and to raise the current social distancing level from 1.5 to level 2.
Jeju Governor Won Hee-ryong stated at a press conference held at the provincial office on the 15th, "Most of the confirmed cases recently occurring in the province are travelers or residents who have visited other regions," adding, "To block community transmission, we will coordinate with the government to implement mandatory diagnostic testing for incoming visitors."
Even Jeju residents will be subject to testing if they visit the mainland and return.
Governor Won said, "We are currently consulting with the government on the timing and specific implementation plans for mandatory diagnostic testing of visitors, and will inform the public once finalized."
He also explained the reason for raising the social distancing level.
Governor Won said, "The damage caused by confirmed cases from Jeju travelers and visitors from outside the province is directly affecting residents," and added, "From midnight on the 18th, social distancing will be raised to level 2."
The spread of COVID-19 in Jeju has not subsided recently.
