Transforming Abandoned Railway Tunnels into 'Historical Spaces'... Korea Rail Network Authority and Cultural Heritage Administration Collaborate on Project

View original image[Asia Economy (Daejeon) Reporter Jeong Il-woong] Abandoned railway tunnels are being transformed into historical spaces for storing, managing, and exhibiting cultural artifacts.
The Korea National Railway announced on the 15th that it has signed a business agreement with the Cultural Heritage Administration based on this plan.
According to the agreement, the two organizations will remodel the ‘Sajinpo Tunnel’ in Daejeon and the ‘Sinri Tunnel’ in Jeonju by next year, converting each tunnel into a storage facility for artifacts and a historical and cultural experience space.
They also agreed to cooperate to ensure that the created spaces can be utilized as regional cultural resources.

Kim Sang-gyun, Director of the Korea National Railway, said, “Taking this business agreement with the Cultural Heritage Administration as an opportunity, we will utilize the abandoned railway tunnels as public history education and experience centers to enhance the value of cultural heritage preservation. Along with this, the Korea National Railway will actively engage in asset development by utilizing idle railway land.”
