Samsung Heavy Industries Develops Eco-Friendly Coating VR Training System
[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Yoon-joo] Samsung Heavy Industries announced on the 14th that it has developed a 'Painting Virtual Reality (VR) Training System' to expand the application of eco-friendly coatings and has officially applied it at the Geoje shipyard.
The painting VR system is a simulator that allows users to directly experience on-site painting work in a three-dimensional virtual space and evaluate their skills through an HMD (Head Mount Display).
Users can operate a spray gun on ship structures realistically replicated in the virtual space to experience painting work using eco-friendly coatings, and can check the results of the practice, such as the dry film thickness, in real time after the training. Through virtual training, users receive real-time feedback on painting speed, direction, and angle, enabling them to self-assess and improve their skills to maintain the highest painting quality and optimal coating consumption.
Painting work is an important process that determines ship quality, such as corrosion prevention, but it is difficult to secure sufficient practice opportunities and efficiency is low, making it challenging to conduct systematic training for cultivating specialized skilled personnel.
Nam Sung-gil, head of the Production Technology Research Center at Samsung Heavy Industries, said, "The painting VR system we developed this time is expected to significantly reduce the training time and costs required to cultivate highly skilled painting workers," adding, "Samsung Heavy Industries plans to continuously nurture specialized painting personnel to expand the application of eco-friendly coatings."

Meanwhile, Samsung Heavy Industries has jointly developed eco-friendly coatings (solvent-free coatings, water-based coatings) with coating manufacturers, applying solvent-free coatings to LNG carriers for the first time in the world in 2018 and water-based coatings to actual ships in 2020, leading and promoting the expansion and dissemination of eco-friendly painting technology in the shipbuilding industry.
