Geumcheon-gu Achieves Great Success Winning the 2020 Korea Human Rights Award
Recognized for Enacting the Nation's First Resident-Participatory 'Human Rights Basic Ordinance' in 2019... Continuing Human Rights Education and Cultural Expansion to Strengthen Community Human Rights Capacity
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Geumcheon-gu (Mayor Yu Seong-hoon) received the '2020 Republic of Korea Human Rights Award' at the Human Rights Day ceremony commemorating the 72nd anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights on the 10th.
The 'Republic of Korea Human Rights Award' has been presented since 2003 by the National Human Rights Commission to recognize organizations and individuals who have contributed to the protection and promotion of human rights, widely publicize their achievements, and contribute to the establishment and activation of a culture of human rights respect. The award is given in conjunction with the 'Universal Declaration of Human Rights Day (December 10)'.
Under the leadership of Mayor Yu Seong-hoon in the 7th local government term, the district has been promoting resident-centered human rights policies based on various human rights education programs in the local community.
Since 2015, it has been operating diverse and specialized human rights education courses for residents and public officials with the goal of strengthening human rights capacity and spreading discourse in the local community.
Additionally, the district formed and operated the 'Human Rights Ordinance Enactment Promotion Team' to enable residents to directly draft human rights ordinances, and in 2019, it enacted the nation's first resident-participatory 'Basic Human Rights Ordinance'.
The district was recognized for its achievement in creating an environment where human rights are realized by viewing administration from the residents' perspective through the human rights ordinance drafted by residents.
Based on the resident-centered Basic Human Rights Ordinance, the district formed a Human Rights Committee in July this year and promoted a research project for the 'Geumcheon-gu Human Rights Policy Basic Plan' to establish the mid- to long-term vision of Geumcheon-gu's human rights policy centered on the committee.
Based on the research results, the district plans to establish the 2021-2025 Geumcheon-gu Human Rights Policy Basic Plan after collecting residents' opinions.
Mayor Yu Seong-hoon of Geumcheon-gu said, "It is very unusual for a local government to receive the Republic of Korea Human Rights Award, and I am pleased that our efforts to protect and promote residents' human rights, the fundamental ideology of administration, have been recognized," adding, "We will fulfill the local government's responsibility to protect and promote human rights so that all Geumcheon-gu residents can live in a city where they are respected."
