Jeonnam Provincial Assembly Member Yoon Myeong-hee Urges Support for Multicultural Students' Learning
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Jun-kyung] Yoon Myung-hee, a member of the Jeonnam Provincial Assembly (Democratic Party of Korea, proportional representation), urged support for improving learning for multicultural students during a 5-minute free speech at the 3rd plenary session held on the 10th.
According to Assemblywoman Yoon Myung-hee, the number of multicultural students in Jeonnam is ▲9,789 in 2018 ▲10,517 in 2019 ▲10,701 in 2020, with the highest proportion of multicultural students nationwide at 4.8%, showing a continuous increasing trend.
Assemblywoman Yoon stated, “To address the learning gap widened further by COVID-19, support such as establishing study rooms for multicultural students must be strengthened,” adding, “In the current reality where online classes have become inevitable, multicultural students with insufficient Korean language skills not only have lower learning comprehension but also lack guardians who can provide care and guidance, or face difficulties receiving help due to language barriers.”

She continued, “If the educational gap is left unattended amid the worsening COVID-19 situation, the learning gap will widen further,” urging, “Jeonnam Province and the Jeonnam Office of Education must cooperate to secure budgets and establish a stable and systematic educational support environment for multicultural students.”
