Busan City announced on the 10th that two locations in Saha-gu, Goejeong-dong?‘Saemteo Park Pagoda Tree (2020-0008)’ and ‘Oeyangpo Battery and Horse Path (2020-0009)’?have been designated as National Forest Cultural Assets.
Busan, which previously had no such ‘assets,’ now has its first and second National Forest Cultural Assets all at once.
National Forest Cultural Assets are forest resources designated and managed annually by the Korea Forest Service after on-site surveys and evaluations of their asset value. These include forests, trees, natural objects, and modern heritage with high ecological, scenic, and emotional preservation value related to forests.
Until now, there were no National Forest Cultural Assets designated by the government in the Busan area, so Busan City has been striving to discover forest cultural assets since March.
Among the 12 newly designated assets by the Korea Forest Service this year, two are located in Busan.
The first National Forest Cultural Asset of Busan, ▲the Pagoda Tree in Saemteo Park, Goejeong-dong, is a 650-year-old ancient tree existing in the city center.
This tree gave rise to the Korean place name ‘Hoewhanamu Jeongja Maeul’ (Pagoda Tree Pavilion Village) in Goejeong (槐亭). The historical significance of the area, which includes the Danmul Spring and the communal laundry site centered around the pagoda tree, and the efforts of Saha-gu to preserve it by purchasing surrounding buildings over several years to create a park, were highly evaluated.
Gadeokdo Oeyangpo Battery and Malgil, designated as national forest cultural assets by the Korea Forest Service. They are Busan City's Asset No. 2.

Although it holds painful history, it was selected as a National Forest Cultural Asset due to its excellent preservation and research value regarding the stone wall construction techniques and mountain path development methods of that time.
