Russian Space Company Advances Satellite Billboard Project..."Advertising in the Night Sky with Artificial Satellites"
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Hyun-woo] A Russian private space company announced plans to showcase large-scale advertisements in the night sky using small satellites in space. The plan involves launching about 20 small satellites to specific locations to create corporate logos in the night sky as a form of advertising.
According to Russian state news agency TASS on the 9th, the local Russian space company 'AvantSpace' recently revealed that it is promoting a satellite billboard project named 'Sazvezdiye,' which means constellation in Russian. The plan is to launch small satellites and maneuver them in the upper atmosphere to form corporate logos, making the logos appear in the night sky over specific areas.
AvantSpace stated that by utilizing small satellites in orbit at 600 km above the Earth, they can emit lasers to create corporate trademarks in the night sky. They explained that at least 20 small satellites are required for this. Previously, in September, AvantSpace conducted laser-related experiments at an altitude of 30 km in the stratosphere to measure light source intensity under conditions similar to space. This advertisement project is also part of experiments to measure light source intensity.
An AvantSpace official said that considering satellite manufacturing costs, the advertising fee is set at $10 million (approximately 10.8 billion KRW) per year for the first contract, and subsequent contracts will be charged $1 million per month.

Although AvantSpace announced that the project would be actively pursued starting in 2022, TASS reported that it remains at the idea stage for now, so whether it will proceed as planned and become a reality is uncertain. Last year, the Russian aerospace company 'START ROCKET' also conceived a similar project but had to abandon it without execution due to international backlash over light pollution.
