Both Parties Unite: "Complete Legislative Tasks in Today's Plenary Session"
[Asia Economy Reporter Jeon Jin-young] The leadership of the Democratic Party of Korea announced on the afternoon of the 9th during the plenary session that they will complete legislation on power institution reforms and livelihood-related laws. The Democratic Party completed the committee review of power institution reform bills such as the High-ranking Officials' Crime Investigation Office (PCC) Act, the Fair Economy Three Acts, and the 5.18 Special Act, which had been adopted as party policy, the day before.
Party leader Lee Nak-yeon said at the Supreme Council meeting held at the National Assembly in the morning, "Today, the National Assembly is about to pass the PCC Act, the National Intelligence Service Act, and the Police Act amendments in the plenary session. It has been 24 years since civil society demanded the introduction of the PCC to investigate crimes by high-ranking officials fairly and strictly, and now the institutionalization of the PCC is within sight," he said.
Lee said, "I feel deeply moved that power institution reform is finally being achieved," adding, "Reform comes with pain. There is resistance. We must overcome all difficulties, including such resistance, and advance history."
He continued, "Once the bills pass the plenary session, the Democratic Party will continue efforts to internalize power institution reform," emphasizing, "At the same time, we will shift our focus to overcoming the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19), stabilizing livelihoods, economic recovery, and preparing for the future."
Lee also said, "Legislative tasks other than power institution reform are also awaiting plenary session approval," and urged, "Do not let your guard down until the end and unite efforts to complete the legislative tasks."
Floor leader Kim Tae-nyeon also said at the Supreme Council meeting that "The bills to be passed in today's plenary session contain the future, livelihood, reform, justice, and fairness that are essential for the future of the Republic of Korea," adding, "They will be a historic milestone toward a country free from privilege and unfairness."
Kim said, "We will open a new chapter of a healthy and transparent market economy order by passing the Fair Economy Three Acts," and added, "We will amend the Three Acts for Special Employment Types (Employment Insurance Act, Industrial Accident Compensation Insurance Act, and Collection Act) and the ILO Three Acts to create a labor-respecting society, and establish justice through the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Act and the 5.18 Act."
He pointed out, "These bills are promises made to the people during the general election and livelihood reform bills that have undergone long social deliberation," adding, "In particular, the Fair Economy Three Acts are bills publicly supported and discussed by opposition party leaders. There is no reason for the opposition to oppose them by causing uproar."
Regarding the People Power Party, he said, "The opposition party is repeating old habits of opposing and engaging in political strife without any alternatives, trying to gain reflexive benefits," emphasizing, "The Democratic Party will act boldly when decisions are needed for the people and the future. The Democratic Party will do what is necessary as the ruling party and be evaluated by its achievements."
