[Sejong=Asia Economy Reporter Kim Hyunjung] The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs and the Ministry of Environment announced on the 8th that highly pathogenic avian influenza (AI) of the H5N8 type has been confirmed in wild birds in Osan, Gyeonggi (Hwanggujicheon), Nonsan, Chungnam (Noseongcheon), Hampyeong, Jeonnam (Gomagwoncheon), and Gyeongju, Gyeongbuk (Hyeongsangang).
Following the confirmation of highly pathogenic avian influenza in wild birds, the areas where the antigen was detected and the surrounding migratory bird habitats have been designated as AI special management zones, and strengthened quarantine measures will be implemented.
An official from the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs stated, "It is a very dangerous situation as highly pathogenic AI antigens have been continuously detected in wild birds across the country (19 cases since October 1)," and urged, "Poultry farmers should be vigilant as contamination sources can be introduced through various routes such as vehicles, people, and wild birds. Please thoroughly implement quarantine measures such as changing boots for each livestock barn, prohibiting free-range farming, and establishing a quicklime belt."
