Cho Hyung-rae Elected as the 11th Head of the Gyeongnam Regional Headquarters of the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kang Woo-kwon] The Gyeongnam Regional Headquarters of the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions (KCTU) announced on the 8th that candidate Jo Hyung-rae, who ran unopposed in the 11th executive election, was elected as the new head of the regional headquarters.
The KCTU Gyeongnam Regional Headquarters Election Commission announced through the vote count notice that from the 28th of last month to the 4th of this month, a referendum on the executive election was conducted targeting 65,000 union members of the electorate, with a voter turnout of 65.54% and an approval rate of 82.28%.
The term of office for the newly elected Jo Hyung-rae as head, Kim Eun-jung as chief deputy head, and Eom Sang-jin as secretary-general will be from January next year to December 2023.
Jo Hyung-rae, the newly elected head, pledged key promises including ▲strengthening labor basic rights through the enactment of the Jeon Tae-il 3 Laws ▲enhancing communication beyond disconnection and non-face-to-face interactions ▲establishing an employment safety net within the region ▲strengthening routine regional solidarity activities ▲active response to the climate and environmental crisis ▲and promoting peace realization movements on the Korean Peninsula.
Jo Hyung-rae said, “With the mindset of representing all workers in the Gyeongnam region, I will establish a business ethos that prioritizes the expansion of labor basic rights and the organization and unity of the KCTU,” adding, “Especially in the era of COVID-19 and the 4th Industrial Revolution, I will prevent situations where workers such as youth, women, irregular, and special employment workers, as well as the common people, are forced to bear pain and responsibility, and transform the union into a ‘social labor union’ to overcome crises.”

Jo was the founder of the Changsin University branch of the National Professors’ Union in 2006 and also served as a member of the Gyeongsangnam-do Provincial Assembly in the same year.
