LG Electronics announced on the 8th that it will unveil the LG CLOi Sterilization Bot at the '2020 Korea Electronics Show,' held from the 9th to the 12th at COEX in Samseong-dong, Seoul.
The LG CLOi Sterilization Bot uses 'UV-C' lamps to eliminate bacteria and viruses. UV-C ultraviolet light, with a wavelength of 100 to 280 nanometers (nm), is primarily used to remove various bacteria. LG Electronics explained that the Korea Conformity Laboratories (KCL) confirmed that the UV-C lamp installed on the robot sterilizes 99.9% of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus within a distance of one meter.
The sterilization bot operates based on autonomous driving and obstacle avoidance technologies. The robot is approximately 160 centimeters (cm) tall, with UV-C lamps located on both sides of its body. The robot moves through indoor spaces, sterilizing the surfaces of objects frequently touched by people. It is useful for disinfection tasks in buildings with many separated and independent spaces, such as hotels, hospitals, schools, and social welfare facilities.
At this exhibition, LG Electronics also unveiled a spray-type robot concept that operates by spraying disinfectant. This robot is useful in relatively large spaces such as office areas, restaurants, and subway stations.
LG Electronics expects that non-face-to-face disinfection work through the CLOi Sterilization Bot will be possible amid the resurgence of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19). It anticipates that this will reduce the burden of disinfection, which previously required people to perform disinfection and cleaning simultaneously, thereby improving work efficiency.
